STIHL MotoMix® Offers Convenience and Performance

Ethanol in fuel and its impact on small engines continues to be a hot topic. Especially with the EPA allowing fuel with 15% ethanol.  A Forbes article spelled out what that could mean to consumers. At best it can impact the performance of the equipment, at worst cause serious damage. By some dealers’ estimation up to 75% of the repair work they do is due to damage caused by poor fuel quality and ethanol which can cause corrosion and carbon deposits inside the engine, dissolve plastic parts and more.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) made its position clear on this issue during recent testimony in front of the House oversight committee on environment and public works. At STIHL our basic recommendation is that fuel be as high an octane rating as possible, at least 89, and contain no more than 10% ethanol. STIHL customers should also be aware that using fuel containing more than 10% ethanol could void the product warranty.

But what should you do when ethanol-free fuel is not available? An article in Popular Mechanics discussed how boutique fuels and pre-mixes could be the answer for some. At STIHL we believe that our patented STIHL MotoMix® is one answer to the ethanol challenge. STIHL MotoMix® is a high performance, ethanol-free premixed 50:1 fuel mixture. Available only through authorized STIHL dealers, STIHL MotoMix® is a non-aromatic premium quality fuel with a minimum 92 octane, and it is mixed with STIHL HP Ultra Oil, a fully synthetic and highly biodegradable two-cycle engine oil.

The result is improved reliability and performance and reduced impact on the environment. Our customers can also expect easier starting. For homeowners especially it also delivers convenience. According to our senior product manger Kent Hall STIHL MotoMix® will eliminate the time and hassle of measuring and mixing your own fuel and oil and delivers excellent engine performance and superior lubrication.
STIHL MotoMix® comes in a convenient 32 ounce (1 quart) container and the way the fuel is formulated means it can be stored up to two years without degrading.  The fuel mix will also stay fresh longer in your equipment.

We felt so good about the product that we made STIHL MotoMix® the official fuel of the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series and it is used in the MS 660 STIHL Magnum chain saws during all competitions. Brad Sorgen, who manages the Series, said that the competitors noticed a difference in performance.  According to them the saws sounded different and ran smoother. And when we started recording our fastest times ever in the Stock Saw event, we knew that the fuel had a real impact on power.

If you have to use fuel with ethanol in it we would recommend that you purchase the highest octane possible and as little as possible at a time. Also avoid storing the fuel in containers or your equipment for any length of time.

  1. Perfect....this is truly the answer to many problems. For starters, put this stuff in your equipment when it's going to sit for a while.
